Before signs, seasons, days and years

      Once upon a time there was a beginning;
      everything was dark, without form, and void,
      and Mr. G. moved upon the face of the waters.

      Before he could see anything, he had to say something, and
      before he could say anything, he must have heard many things.

      Thus appeared the above and the under, the earth from the waters;
      the great light and the lesser light, and the stars also.

      Everything moved and lived; and Mr. G.,
      who had constantly spoken,
      rested from all his works,
      which he had made, and beheld:

      What was before, before it was?
      Before I saw, before it spoke?
      Is not all beginning already a zenith?

      The sun was curling gently around the stones on the river bank.
      Turning them over, no matter how one looks at them,
      one discovers unanswered and outrageous things.
